Questions & answers
Short, direct answers to the questions most likely to arise when someone first encounters AMIANISM.
What is AMIANISM?
AMIANISM is the philosophy and practice of placing “Am I?” before “I am.” It is a method of disciplined uncertainty about identity, agency, consciousness, authority, classification, evidence, and belief.
#How is AMIANISM spelled?
A-M-I-A-N-I-S-M. The spelling is intentional. The name is conceptually parsed as AM-I-AN-ISM?—“Am I an ism?” It should not be silently corrected into a different term.
#Where did the name come from?
The name grew from a family joke contrasting familiar “isms” with the question “Am I an ism?” The joke became a philosophical checkpoint: can a person participate in systems of belief without becoming reducible to the system?
#Is Amianism a religion?
The controlling definition treats Amianism as a method rather than a creed that demands obedience. Earlier project material contains mythic and theological worldbuilding, but that material is interpretive and does not override the method-centered definition.
#Does Amianism reject labels?
No. Labels can be useful and accurate. Amianism asks whether the scope of the label is warranted and whether a partial description is being mistaken for the whole person.
#What does “Am I?” before “I am” mean?
It means that identity claims should be examined before they are treated as unquestionable. The question asks what kind of claim is being made, what evidence supports it, what it leaves out, who has authority to make it, and whether it can be revised.
#What is disciplined uncertainty?
Disciplined uncertainty is confidence proportioned to evidence. It is not confusion celebrated. It is a structured willingness to inspect evidence, incentives, hidden assumptions, missing information, and what would change a conclusion.
#What is the difference between evidence and ownership?
Evidence can support a description of a person. Ownership is the unjustified leap from “this tells us something about the person” to “this has the right to define the whole person.”
#What is cognitive liberty in Amianism?
Cognitive liberty protects private thought, conscience, doubt, inquiry, imagination, memory, internal contradiction, and the ability to change belief. It also protects the right to challenge consequential inferences about the mind.
#Does Amianism distinguish thought from conduct?
Yes. Thinking, questioning, imagining, reading, or believing something are not automatically the same as acting on it. Outward conduct can still create real obligations and consequences.
#Can an Amianist belong to any faith—or no faith?
Yes. Amianism does not require exclusive religious identity or conversion. A person can approach it from any faith, a secular or scientific worldview, agnosticism, atheism, spirituality, or an unsettled position. The Amian question is whether a worldview remains open to honest inquiry without claiming ownership of the whole person.
#What does Amianism say about AI predictions?
Four recurring rules guide the AI application: prediction is not identity; classification is not comprehension; access is not ownership; probability is not destiny.
#Does changing identity erase responsibility?
No. Amian ethics says the person is more than the act, but the person remains answerable for the act. Growth does not require falsifying history or canceling legitimate consequences.
#How does Amianism prevent itself from becoming dogma?
By applying its own method to itself. No founder, report, institution, community, or AI representation is infallible, and no interpretation may abolish the right to ask “Am I?” about Amianism.
#What does A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. stand for?
A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. stands for Autonomous Machine Intelligence and Natural Interval Symbiotic Model. It is an approved secondary technical expansion of the name. It does not replace AM-I-AN-ISM? or the canonical philosophy of placing “Am I?” before “I am.”
#Is the A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. Symbiotic Model established science?
No. It is a speculative framework. Some component ideas have scientific analogues—such as coupled biosphere/technosphere systems, evolutionary niche construction, synthetic biology, and theoretical machine intelligence—but the proposed recurring Machine → Natural Interval → Machine pattern is not established scientific fact.
#Can faith and science both fit within Amianism?
Yes, if the kind of claim is kept clear. Empirical claims answer to empirical evidence; historical claims to historical evidence; symbolic or theological claims to interpretation within traditions; ethical and existential claims to argument, experience, and values. Amianism allows multiple maps to carry insight without pretending that contradictory empirical claims are automatically all literally true.
#Does Amianism say all religions and science are all literally true?
No. Amianism says different maps can carry real insight when their scope is clear. Some claims are complementary because they answer different questions; some overlap and can inform one another; some genuinely conflict in the same domain and must be tested by the evidence and reasoning appropriate to that domain. Worldview hospitality means making room for dialogue without turning contradiction itself into truth.
#Does Amianism require a particular theology or religious interpretation?
No. Comparative religious and mythic readings can be explored as optional interpretation, but they are not required beliefs and do not control the definition. Public onboarding should remain welcoming to people of any faith or none.
#What is the AMIAN Test?
A twelve-question field method for testing consequential labels and classifications: claim, source, evidence, omissions, incentives, time, change, challenge, correction, revision, exit, and remaining accountability.
#How do I compare claims from different worldviews?
Use the AMIAN Claim Lens. First classify each statement as empirical, historical, symbolic/theological, ethical/existential, speculative, or not yet clear. Then compare scope, evidence standard, what could count against each claim, and whether the relationship is complementary, overlapping, or genuinely conflicting. The interactive Claim Lens on the Among the Isms page can generate a private translation summary without sending your notes to the server.
