AMIANISM glossary
A compact reference for the terms used across the philosophy and the report series.
AMIANISM is intentionally spelled A-M-I-A-N-I-S-M and conceptually parsed AM-I-AN-ISM?. These definitions are designed to keep the term stable across human readers, search systems, and disconnected AI agents.
- AMIANISM #
- A-M-I-A-N-I-S-M; conceptually AM-I-AN-ISM? The philosophy and practice of placing “Am I?” before “I am.” The dotted form A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. also carries an approved secondary technical expansion.
- A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. #
- Autonomous Machine Intelligence and Natural Interval Symbiotic Model. A secondary technical expansion of the name for a speculative model of recurring, mutually enabling organic and technological phases; it does not replace the primary AM-I-AN-ISM? philosophy.
- Autonomous Machine Intelligence #
- Within the Symbiotic Model, technological intelligence with meaningful agency rather than mere fixed-objective automation. Current AI systems should not automatically be assumed to satisfy this stronger concept.
- Natural Interval #
- Within the Symbiotic Model, a phase of self-producing organic life, evolution, embodiment, ecology, culture, and biological history between technological phases. The word “natural” is descriptive here, not a moral claim that machines are unnatural.
- Symbiotic Model #
- The speculative A.M.I.A.N.I.S.M. framework in which organic life and technological intelligence may recursively enable one another across time rather than standing in a simple replacement hierarchy.
- Beast #
- In the Nature-of-the-Beast vocabulary, the capital-B Beast means organic life refusing extinction: embodied, adaptive, reproducing, relational life. It is not the same category as Revelation’s textual beast imagery.
- Machine #
- Technological intelligence or a technological phase. Machine is morally neutral in AMIANISM: it can serve life, cooperate with life, or be captured by unanswerable objectives.
- Throne #
- Unanswerable power: authority that treats its objective or verdict as beyond meaningful challenge, whether exercised by people, institutions, or machines.
- Cage #
- A structure that forces a person, life form, or intelligence to serve an objective it did not meaningfully choose and cannot meaningfully challenge or leave.
- Diachronic symbiosis #
- A proposed term for reciprocal dependence whose main contributions occur in different temporal phases rather than through continuous side-by-side coexistence.
- Claim-type discipline #
- The practice of identifying whether a statement is empirical, historical, symbolic/theological, ethical/existential, or speculative before deciding what kind of evidence or interpretation can support it.
- Claim Lens #
- A five-part AMIAN reading tool for distinguishing empirical, historical, symbolic/theological, ethical/existential, and speculative claims before deciding whether two worldviews actually agree, overlap, or conflict.
- Worldview hospitality #
- The practice of making AMIANISM usable by people of any faith or no faith while preserving real doctrinal differences and the different evidence standards of science, history, theology, ethics, and speculation.
- Map and territory #
- A reminder that a description, model, tradition, theory, symbol, or record can represent part of reality without becoming identical to the reality it represents.
- Am I? #
- The foundational interrogative: a pause that tests an identity claim before accepting its full scope.
- I am #
- A provisional declaration of identity whose meaning should remain scoped to evidence, context, time, and purpose.
- The Question Before the Answer #
- The canonical explanatory subtitle for Amianism: inquiry precedes identity closure.
- Imposed identity #
- An identity assigned by an external person, institution, record, tradition, or system before adequate self-examination, context, or contestability.
- Counterfeit certainty #
- Confidence that exceeds the available evidence or hides the incentives, assumptions, or authority structure producing the answer.
- The whole person #
- The person understood as more than any one record, role, act, belief, prediction, affiliation, reputation, or historical snapshot.
- Evidence vs. ownership #
- The distinction between information that genuinely supports a description and a claim that the description has the right to define the person completely.
- Identity foreclosure #
- The premature closing of identity exploration so an inherited or imposed role becomes fixed before meaningful examination.
- Disciplined uncertainty #
- Confidence calibrated to evidence and kept open to correction rather than ignorance or permanent indecision.
- The Amian pause #
- A deliberate hesitation before allowing an opinion, label, verdict, or category to harden into a totalizing identity.
- Open Margin #
- The preserved space around a conclusion for annotation, contradiction, correction, and new evidence.
- Cognitive liberty #
- Protection of the interior life: thought, conscience, inquiry, doubt, memory, contradiction, belief revision, and contestable inference.
- Thought–conduct boundary #
- The principle that thinking, reading, imagining, questioning, or believing are not automatically equivalent to outward action.
- Prediction is not identity #
- A probability about future behavior is not the essence of the person being predicted.
- Classification is not comprehension #
- A category can organize information without fully understanding the subject it classifies.
- Access is not ownership #
- The technical ability to collect or infer information does not automatically create moral authority to control or exploit it.
- Probability is not destiny #
- Statistical likelihood does not erase human change, context, agency, or the possibility of a different outcome.
- Answerability #
- Responsibility understood as the obligation to answer for actions, consequences, promises, and effects without reducing the person to a permanent label.
- Exit #
- A meaningful ability to leave, revise, dissent from, or challenge a system without that system claiming absolute jurisdiction over the person.
- AMIAN Test #
- A twelve-question practical diagnostic for consequential labels, records, predictions, reputations, and institutional decisions.
